Which Engine Oil Should I Use in My UTE?

Choosing the right engine oil for your Ute is much more complicated than just finding the best price and the most attractive container. Engine oil is one of the most important products your Ute needs; it is obvious that not having oil will cause irreparable damage to your engine in a very short time. But choosing the wrong oil can drastically shorten the engine life and cause major repair bills.

If you are ever unsure of which oil to use asking one of the friendly guys at Ute hire on the Gold Coast what they use and recommend is a great way to get the right advice from someone who is experienced.

There are so many different oils available so knowing what they do and how they work will help you decide which is best for your Ute. These are the common types:
  • Conventional mineral oil, this oil is refined from crude oil a range of viscosity qualities and grades and is recommended for most common engine designs and regular driving conditions.

  • Synthetic Oil is mineral oil that has been chemically re-engineered. This removes most of the impurities and changes the molecules giving them a more uniform shape, allowing for better performance at high and low temperatures. It is often used in high performance cars.

  • Synthetic Blended Oil is a mixture of synthetic and mineral oils, it has properties that resist oxidation and also perform well at different temperature extremes as well as under heavy load situations making it a good choice for 4x4 and large vehicles.

  • High Mileage Oil is formulated especially for vehicles that have traveled over 125,000kms it includes additives that are designed to prevent leaks and reduce oil burn off.
How engine oil works

Car Engine oil is historically a mixture of mineral oil about 80% and a variety of about  20% of additives designed to increase its performance. These include antioxidants, anti-wear additives, water dispersants as well as detergents to help clean your engines interior. Modern oils include viscosity index improvers that are designed to ensure that the oil retains its lubricating properties at all operating temperatures.

Before you start your engine most of the oil is in the sump or reservoir at the bottom, when you start it is picked up by the oil pump and passed through the oil filter and then on every moving part to lubricate and protect via a circuit of oilways.

The oil creates a thin layer of lubrication between all metal surfaces that stops them wearing out and becoming damaged. It also cools the engine by drawing away the heat from friction as it cleans and prevents corrosion on the surfaces.

Engine Oils are rated by their Viscosity, which is its flow resistance when at low temperatures. This is the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) rating.

Your Auto Mechanic, Auto Manufacture website or local Ute Hire Company on the Gold Coast can advise you on the best oil for you Ute.

Most Utes in Australia are high performance capable machines so using and changing oil at the recommended times (5,000kms), using a good quality Synthetic Blended Oil of viscosity recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer is the best option to keep your Ute in Good running condition.
